Description

The area around Tomintoul has both treeless moors and lush forests. It’s also diverse in the activities and adventures available across the local countryside. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.

The village is on the famed Whisky Trail, which also includes Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin, and Marypark. The surrounding countryside forms the Glenlivet Estate.

The author Captain W. E. Johns lived in the Richmond Hotel at Tomintoul from 1944 to 1947, before renting Pitchroy Lodge on the nearby Ballindalloch Estate from 1947 to 1953. So, with no further ado, I give you… Tomintoul 16! Priced where 16 year-old single malts used to be priced, it’s bottled at the basement strength of 40% ABV after aging in exciting extremely usual ex-bourbon barrels. As of 2019, the village offers many small accommodation facilities (The Smugglers hostel, B&Bs and holiday cottages) as well as three larger hotels (Hotel Square, The Glenavon and the Richmond Arms). [19] Hotel Square has a "highly recommended" restaurant using local seasonal produce. The regional whisky offerings and craft beer can be sampled in the hotel's pub. The village also made the Glenlivet Walking Festival an annual event as suggested by the 2012 Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan. In addition to tourism and the nearby whisky industry, sheep and beef cattle are raised on farms around the village. [20] Notable people [ edit ] Tomintoul 16YO has been matured in selected Ex-Bourbon American Oak casks. It’s been crafted by 4th generation distiller Robert Fleming. The Gentle Gunman

Due to its location within the Cairngorms Dark Sky Park, Tomintoul is an ideal place to while away long winter nights stargazing and dreaming. Enter Tomintoul – the gentle dram. A whisky which you both see everywhere and yet is still somehow under the radar. A whisky which to my mind owes much of its composition to the distillery's history (and current) requirements for blending – and as such struggles to shine in our modern world. I mean sure, if you want the status symbol of an old single malt to show off to your friends whilst still having an easy drinking, sessionable whisky, Tomintoul fits the bill. I suspect, however, that many consumers nowadays would prefer something a little more characterful, a little more intense and they wouldn’t particularly care if that meant buying a much younger whisky. The village was laid out on a grid pattern by Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon in 1775. It followed the construction, 20 years previously, of a military road by William Caulfeild– now the A939. The duke's motivation for his efforts was the hope that a permanent settlement would minimise cattle theft and illegal distilling of spirits in the area. [7] Estimates suggest that in the early 1700s there had been up to 200 illicit stills in the Livet glen, with spirits smuggled out over the Ladder hills. [8]
