Walter B. Edgar, ed. The South Carolina Encyclopedia. Columbia, SC: University of South Carolina Press, 2006), p. 9. It was possible to harvest it in Peru and other parts of Mexico. However, the state of Oaxaca held the highest quality of red cochineal, earning the name of grana fina. In fact, the Spaniards were never able to compete with the skill of the communities there. Therefore, the production of this Mexican color remained almost exclusively Indigenous and few Europeans settled in that territory. This product positioned Oaxaca as one of the most important areas in New Spain. Indigo and its derivatives featuring intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding have very low solubility in organic solvents. They can be made soluble using transient protecting groups such as the tBOC group, which suppresses intermolecular bonding. [32] Heating of the tBOC indigo results in efficient thermal deprotection and regeneration of the parent H-bonded pigment.

Adolf Baeyer (1883) "Ueber die Verbindungen der Indigogruppe" [On the compounds of the indigo group], Berichte der Deutschen chemischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin, 16: 2188-2204; see especially p. 2204. Maya blue first appeared around 800, and it was still used in the 16th century in several Convents of Colonial Mexico, notably in the paintings of the indigenous Nahua painter Juan Gerson in Tecamachalco. These paintings are a clear example of the combination of indigenous and European techniques sometimes known as Arte Indocristiano. After that, the techniques for its production were lost in Mexico, but in Cuba there are examples from as late as 1830. [3] Resistance to weathering [ edit ] Because of its high value as a trading commodity, indigo was often referred to as blue gold. Indigo was often referred to as Blue Gold as it was an ideal trading commodity; high value, compact and long lasting

Take the bowl outside and leave it under a tree, the bigger the better. After a night outside, pour everything out into the Earth. Dissolve or crush a Tablet in a bowl of water and place it on your altar to invite in good spirits and keep negative ones at bay. Finally, if the water is clear with no weird shapes, no signs of blood or bad odour, then this means that there is no work of malevolent magic against you. Cast a protective spell and send your love to the Universe. You are safe!

The plant finds some use in domestic medicine in Guatemala. Indigo is often applied to the stings of bees and other insects to reduce pain and inflammation, although its efficacy is somewhat doubtful[331 ]. A decoction of the roots is taken against stomach-ache[310 ]. A tincture of the roots and seeds in rum is used as a vermifuge[310 ]. The leaves are resolutive and sudorific[348 ]. An infusion of bruised leaves is used as a treatment for fever[310 ]. Combined with the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria and the bark of Phellodendron chinense, it is used as a medicine against scrofula[310 ]. The fresh leaves are used in a warm bath to act as a calmative[348 ]. The plant juice is used as a treatment for diarrhoea[310 ]. Cut to the ground repeatedly - resprouting vigorously. Non-destructive management systems maintaining the soil organic carbon. Chango is one of the most popular and also controversial Orisha in the pantheon of La Regla Lucumi, more commonly known as Santeria. He is honored on December 4th the feast day for Santa Barbara in the Catholic church.

Physical Characteristics

The precursor to indigo is indican, a colorless, water-soluble derivative of the amino acid tryptophan, and Indigofera leaves contain as much as 0.2–0.8% of this compound. Pressing cut leaves into a vat and soaking hydrolyzes the indican, releasing β- D- glucose and indoxyl. The indoxyl dimerizes in the mixture, and after 12-15 hours of fermentation yields the yellow, water soluble leucoindigo. Subsequent exposure to air forms the blue, water-insoluble indigo dye. [2] [3] The dye precipitates from the fermented leaf solution upon oxidation, but may also be precipitated when mixed with a strong base [4] such as lye. The solids are filtered, pressed into cakes, dried, and powdered. The powder was then mixed with various other substances to produce different shades of blue and purple.
