In this case, the fact that the design hasn’t changed in over a decade is probably a good thing, and spill resistance only enhances the impression of a simple, reliable product. Frills are limited to a calculator hot key, but for basic needs you won’t get much better for just over a tenner. Non-weighted keyboards can be fine for the casual player, or for someone who only ever intends to play organ or synthesizer. But if you learn or practice exclusively on non-weighted keyboards, you will likely find it difficult to make the transition to acoustic piano. Mechanical key switches also possess a more significant amount of customizability. Different keyboard switches have varying weight actuation requirements available out in the market. Mechanical key switches also tend to be more durable in the long term because of their harder plastic housing built to withstand constant typing. If you're a fan of mechanical keyboards, you'll also want to go for a split model. Most split keyboards feature mechanical switches, while most unibody models use cheaper scissor switches or membrane-based keys to help keep the chassis slim and the price low. There are other features you're more likely to find on one type of ergonomic keyboard than the other. Many unibody keyboards, even budget models, are wireless. Many split keyboards have dedicated macro or shortcut keys on the left edge of the board. Traditional: These have old-fashioned, typewriter-style keys above a membrane or mechanical switch. The keys tend to have more travel (the distance the key moves before a press is registered), although the action (the weight and feel of the keys) can vary enormously from keyboard to keyboard. The lighter feel to the keys make it easier to play faster passages with less finger strain. Electric Piano Player As the name implies, these are keys to which weights have been added so as to simulate the complex mechanics that occurs when a key is depressed in an acoustic piano — a series of levers that eventually cause a hammer to strike a grouping of two or three strings. This system has a natural weight or resistance that you can feel as you play a piano, and it’s that resistance that helps you gauge how hard to hit a key to get the sound you want. Use a delicate touch and the note will be soft and less strident; strike with greater force and the extra pressure will cause the hammer to hit the strings harder, resulting in a louder, brighter sound. Changes to the keyboard layout increase the learning curve, but they can make for a better experience over time. Choosing the right key switches that suit your typing style can also go a long way in preventing RSIs and promoting overall keyboard comfort. You'll want to consult with your doctor if you're already experiencing pain; a light-touch key switch type like the Cherry MX Red might be a more beneficial choice than a Cherry MX Brown switch set, for example. The right mechanical keys are all down to your specific hand/wrist condition and comfort level. On-board features can often be upgraded or expanded with new firmware, additional software or attached hardware, but the physical nature of the instrument can’t be changed.
